Making Sushi

My family got together for Roll Your Own Sushi Night this weekend. It was the second time we've done this together, so everyone understood the prep work and process and it went much smoother and faster than last time. It also helped that Jill hosted and her kitchen has a huge amount of counter space. The menu included sushi rolls, miso soup and tempura everything! We split up the shopping list so one person (me last time) wasn't stuck with shopping for everything. It was a pretty long list of stuff:

Krista
Fish --
tempura batter
sweet eel sauce (I made this from Dashi -fish stock powder, sugar, soy sauce and water)
wasabi
spicy mayo (Japanese mayo and sriracha)
Rice Vinegar
rollers
Chopsticks
sushi rolling mats

Mom
4 RIPE Avocados
1 cucumber
4 carrots
alfalfa sprouts
1 lemon
1 package Strawberries
sliced almonds
cream cheese

Carli You'll need to make a trip to an asian market or whole foods, most likely
flying fish eggs
ginger
seaweed
Sushi rice
toasted sesame seeds
Shrimp
Miso soup

Jill
Vegetable oil
potatoes
asparagus
sweet potatoes
mango
your deep fryer and rice cooker
soy sauce and less sodium soy sauce

It does require a lot of ingredients and a long cleanup, but with many helping hands, it makes for a really fun night! Our favorite part (once we were done rolling sushi and eating ourselves sick) was figuring out what else we could deep fry. Besides the shrimp and veggies, we fried tried string cheese, ice cream, and fat boys. One thing I'll tell you, I'm so glad we don't own a deep fryer!
